How PVA Water-Soluble Bags Work

Plain-English explanations of the science behind our bags — including the parts that are still being studied.

What Is PVA?

PVA — polyvinyl alcohol — is a synthetic polymer that dissolves in water. You encounter it every day without realizing it: it's the film around laundry pods, the lubricant in certain eye drops, and a material approved for food packaging.

Here's the critical distinction: PVA is not a traditional plastic. Traditional plastics like polyethylene (PE) and polypropylene (PP) are built on a carbon-carbon backbone — chains that water, sunlight, and most biological processes cannot break apart. PVA has a different molecular structure that water actually interacts with and breaks down.

The One Big Thing That's Different

PVA has little OH groups (an oxygen and hydrogen holding hands) hanging off the chain like charms on a bracelet. Polyethylene has nothing hanging off — it's just a plain chain of carbons.

Those little OH charms are everything. PVA holds out its hands everywhere (those OH groups). So water runs up and hugs it from all sides, pulls it apart, and it dissolves — just like sugar does!

Polyethylene keeps its arms crossed. Water comes by, tries to hug it… nothing. No hands to grab. So water just slides right off, forever. That's why a plastic bag can sit in the ocean for 500 years and barely change.

Why Does PVA Disappear in Nature?

Two things happen when PVA meets the world:

Step 1 — Water grabs it

Those OH groups attract water molecules, which wedge themselves between the PVA chains and pull them apart. The bag gets weaker and weaker until it's just liquid.

Step 2 — Microbes eat it

Tiny bacteria and fungi in soil and water love to snack on PVA. They have enzymes (little chemical scissors) that chop it up into carbon dioxide, water, and harmless bits — the same stuff plants breathe in.

Polyethylene? Microbes take one sniff and walk away. Nothing to grab onto, nothing to eat.

What Happens When It Gets Wet?

Water molecules penetrate the PVA polymer matrix, breaking the hydrogen bonds that hold the material together. At room temperature, this process takes 10–30 minutes. Heat accelerates it significantly — at 140°F (60°C)+, the bag dissolves in 2–5 minutes.

Every Solubelle bag — including the produce bag — uses the same formula and is rain-resistant under normal conditions. A brief shower, wet produce, or damp hands won't compromise the bag; full dissolution takes 10–30 minutes in cold water, or 2–5 minutes in hot water.

Is It Safe for Food, People & Animals?

Animals that ingest PVA pass it safely. It does not accumulate in tissue or cause toxic effects at incidental exposure levels.

What About Wastewater?

We want to be direct with you about this. The 2021 ASU/Rolsky study found that PVA does not fully biodegrade in all wastewater treatment plants — particularly those without the right microbial populations or operating at lower temperatures.

This is a real and evolving area of research. We are monitoring it closely.

How Is It Different from Compostable or Biodegradable Bags?

“Compostable”bags — typically made from PLA (polylactic acid) — require industrial composting facilities operating at 58°C or above to break down. In the real world, less than 10% of Americans have access to industrial composting. Most “compostable” bags end up in landfill, where they behave identically to conventional plastic.

“Biodegradable” has no legal definition in the United States. Any manufacturer can print it on any bag. It means nothing without a standard behind it.

PVA bags dissolve in any water source and biodegrade in aerobic conditions — including soil and water — without requiring specialized infrastructure that most people don't have access to.
